Friday 19th October – walk ***** – Petworth Deer Park – sunny and
warm.
We were supposed to head off from Sayers Croft yesterday morning but had a
message from Hannah to say Arlo was up and would we like to go over so we
went for breakfast from our campervan parked in the carpark. We then soon
arranged to stay another day while Rob finished off at work and all go for
a walk at Petworth Deer Park on Friday. We had another top day with the
delightful Arlo, in the garden then out on a couple of Sayers Croft trails
including the maze with Arlo stomping about in his wellies. A shopping trip
to the Cranleigh Co-op where his doting Grandparents couldn’t resist the
kids clothing section and Arlo got two fantastic baby grows and three long
sleeved tops at a great price too. Mag cooked a delicious chicken tea and I
was lucky enough to put the little fella to bed, another lump in the throat
moment as he drifts off holding your finger, can’t believe you can love
someone so much:) We then retire to the van, a bit chilly, diesel heater on
and pig out on two bags of my Birthday chocolates!
After a good night in the van we get a text to say that Arlo is up so Mag
walks over to say hello and make the porridge while I pack the van up. We
are both greeted by a very smiley Arlo running around in his lovely new
baby grow :) After a relaxing morning we leave Ewhurst driving first to a
Garden Centre at Horsham full of cool stuff including a giant polar bear,
Santa, loads of expensive garden statues and a huge selection of Christmas
stuff. Arlo loved it even if his Dad was less impressed! Mag and Hannah
have fun buying shrubs, bulbs and succulents while I sit on statue
Santa’s knee with Arlo, who was only a little terrified!!! I even get Rob
to pose with Arlo on the massive polar bear! Its then a short drive to one
of our favourite places in this area, the beautiful Petworth Deer Park with
its large NT house. With Arlo sound asleep the grown up’s, me, Mag, Rob
and Hannah sit in the warm autumn sunshine enjoying a cheese and biscuit
snack. Then Arlo awoke and, with him in his buggy, we set off on a circular
walk to take in the autumn colours and lovely Sussex Downs. The path to the
right climbs up steeply by the park wall and is little used, hence there
were deer everywhere including a group of male Fallow deer with top
antlers. I took over the buggy pushing with, at times, a little help from
Mag as the path continued steep, narrow and bumpy, Arlo was loving the ride
with the male Deer barking everywhere and trying to keep their ladies under
control! You could get really close to the deer feeding on the grass and
chestnuts before they would skit off:) It was lovely to hear Rob and
Hannah’s banter as they talked about an anti- Brexit march in London that
Rob is attending on Saturday, lets hope something can be sorted to stay in
Europe as in all my years I have never seen this country in such a mess:(
Now on a better path and with the large house in site we head down to the
lake full of geese and ducks, Arlo loves a duck duck !!! We enter the house
grounds with Arlo now walking and get tea and cake from the café. Rather
disappointing dry old cake but Arlo had fun playing in the leaves and
enjoyed his piece of cake, ending up with nearly a whole slice!!! Then it
was onto the beautiful house arboretum with a large selection of trees many
with stunning foliage. Arlo now in his wellies was stomping along taking it
all in holding his special leaves:) We take five at the round garden folly
as a hot air balloon flew over making the most of the perfect weather,
clear blue sky, warm with light wind:) Then down the hill returning to the
Deer Park, we were lucky when we met a NT worker who unlocked a gate for us
saving us retracing our steps! Then back past the large lake and to the
van. We were out for 3 hours 45 minutes covering nearly 6 miles. It was
now time for our sad goodbyes after a couple of amazing days - still we
hope to see them all again in a month and again at Christmas and not
forgetting our Wednesday WhatsApp pictures in between:) Mag and I then
carry on to another one of our favourite spots, parking up on Bignor Hill
for the night as the sun sets. If the weather is nice we will head off on
our bikes tomorrow. As darkness falls we have the whole area all to
ourselves, just how we like it:)
